What the 2026 WNBA Standings Say About the Playoff Race

The 2026 WNBA playoff race is taking shape around two separate battles: Minnesota is trying to protect the league’s best record, while several teams are packed closely behind it and fighting for home-court advantage.

The WNBA’s latest standings show the Minnesota Lynx leading at 29–7. The Golden State Valkyries and Las Vegas Aces follow at 25–9 and 24–12, respectively. Indiana sits fourth at 24–12, with Atlanta at 21–13, New York at 22–14, Washington at 20–14 and Dallas at 20–16 also positioned among the top eight.

Minnesota has created the clearest separation

Minnesota’s record gives the Lynx a meaningful cushion, but the next group remains unsettled. Golden State has matched the league’s strongest teams while establishing itself as a serious contender in only its second season. Las Vegas remains within reach of the top two, powered by A’ja Wilson’s interior scoring, rebounding and defense.

The difference between finishing first and finishing fourth could affect the entire postseason path. Higher seeds receive more favorable home-court positioning, and the WNBA’s bracket-style playoffs seed all eight qualifiers by regular-season record rather than separating them into conference brackets.

The Liberty’s margin is narrow

New York’s 22–14 record keeps the Liberty in the top half of the field, but the margin above the playoff line is not the only issue. The Liberty are also chasing teams with comparable records and must convert their remaining games against direct competitors.

Indiana visits New York on August 22, one of several late-season games that could change the order quickly. Dallas hosts Indiana on August 20, while Atlanta faces Las Vegas and Los Angeles in a demanding stretch. Those games offer a useful test of whether the contenders can maintain their position against strong opposition.

Injuries can change the table faster than talent

New York’s ceiling depends partly on the availability of its frontcourt. The league’s official injury reporting system lists player status close to game time, and recent Liberty reports have included Breanna Stewart, Nyara Sabally, Isabelle Harrison and Leonie Fiebich at various points.

An injury does more than remove one scorer. It can alter a team’s spacing, rebounding, defensive matchups and substitution patterns. For a club separated from rivals by only a few games, even a short absence can affect seeding.

Players worth watching down the stretch

A’ja Wilson remains the central figure for Las Vegas, while Minnesota’s depth has allowed the Lynx to sustain the league’s best record. Dallas has also received important two-way production from Jessica Shepard, who recently recorded her 20th double-double of the season and passed 500 career assists.

The remaining schedule will decide whether the standings stay compressed or begin to split. With the regular season ending September 24 and the playoffs beginning September 27, every game now carries both immediate value and postseason consequences.
