Why Max Verstappen Had to Give Back Two Positions at the Spanish Grand Prix

Summary: This article explains why Red Bull ordered Max Verstappen to hand back two places after his opening-lap move at the Spanish Grand Prix, and how that decision shaped the podium.

One Corner Changed the Race

At the start of the Spanish Grand Prix, Max Verstappen cut the opening corner. In the same move, he passed Lewis Hamilton and race winner Kimi Antonelli. It was a quick overtake, but it came with a problem. Verstappen had left the track to get past.

Keeping a position gained that way is not treated as a fair result. RacingNews365 reported that Red Bull instructed Verstappen to return both positions. The four-time world champion initially complained, then did what his team asked.

The Call Came From the Pit Wall

Red Bull made the decision before race officials had to step in. Autosport’s coverage said the team defended the move afterwards. That defence reflected an old piece of race management: it is safer to give a position back voluntarily than to risk a time penalty later.

Verstappen’s own reaction was relaxed. Formula 1 reported him saying, “It’s just the nature of the track.” The Madring layout encourages aggressive first-corner attempts. This one did not quite survive contact with the rules.

What the Handback Did to the Race

The instruction cost Verstappen the places he had gained. RacingNews365 reported that Hamilton's retirement later promoted him back into third. A virtual safety car then stopped Lando Norris from pitting while he led, and Verstappen moved up to second.

Norris, on fresher tyres, closed in during the final laps. Verstappen could not pull away, but he also refused to crack. RacingNews365 described his response to the successful defence as comical. It was a tense fight with a lighter ending.

Why the Details Matter

There is no indication in the reports that Verstappen received an additional penalty. The handback was the consequence: he gained two places by cutting a corner, and he gave them back.

The episode shows that race control and teams do not always have to agree. Red Bull chose the cautious route, and the strategy worked. Verstappen lost the lead but stayed in the fight and ended the race on the podium. Norris’s late charge came up just short.
