Why England’s Nations League Squad Changed: Five Withdrawals and Two Call-Ups

Thomas Tuchel’s England squad changed before the players met up. Five members of the original selection pulled out because of injury, and two replacements were called in for the coming Nations League fixtures.

A Planned Squad Lost Five Players

England were preparing for Nations League matches against Spain, Czech Republic and Croatia. Cole Palmer had been recalled by Tuchel after being left out of the World Cup squad in the summer. According to Sky Sports, Palmer then played the full 90 minutes in Chelsea’s defeat to Brentford.

Those three fixtures suddenly looked different when five players withdrew. The Guardian reported that Cole Palmer, Declan Rice, Kobbie Mainoo, Marcus Rashford and Tino Livramento were all ruled out because of injury. It was particularly notable for Palmer, who had only just returned to the set-up.

Sky Sports reported that the Chelsea player’s injury was not serious but needed to be managed, and that, from Chelsea’s perspective, it did not make sense for him to go away on international duty for three weeks. The available reports did not give the same detail for Rice, Mainoo, Rashford or Livramento.

Two Call-Ups and a Smaller Squad

Tuchel called up Everton midfielder James Garner and Nottingham Forest captain Morgan Gibbs-White. The BBC reported that both players would join the squad on Tuesday.

With five players out and two added, Tuchel’s group is three players smaller than the original selection. That leaves a smaller group than Tuchel had planned and gives opportunities to players who were not in the original squad.

Why the Next Fixtures Matter

England’s Nations League programme against Spain, Czech Republic and Croatia will go ahead without several names who looked likely to be involved. The withdrawals affect more than the starting eleven. They also shape how Tuchel manages minutes across three games in a long international break.

Palmer’s situation is the clearest example. He was brought back into the fold, played a full match for Chelsea, and then had to withdraw before joining up with England. His injury appears short-term, but it still removes a player who had been brought back into the plans.

The same is true, in different contexts, for Rice, Mainoo, Rashford and Livramento. Each had been picked for the original squad, which made them candidates for significant playing time. Without them, Tuchel’s selection becomes harder to predict. The next few days will show how he reshapes the team, but the immediate picture is straightforward: injuries changed England’s Nations League plans, and two late call-ups arrived to fill the gaps.
