Why Does the Powerball Jackpot Keep Growing?

Summary: The Powerball jackpot has climbed to an estimated $467 million after Saturday's drawing produced no top-prize winner. This article explains how rollovers drive jackpot growth, the odds of winning, the prize tiers, and why the cash payout is lower than the advertised figure.

No Winner, Higher Jackpot

Saturday's Powerball drawing delivered the numbers 4, 42, 44, 55, 59 and a Powerball of 14, according to IndyStar. No ticket matched them all, USA Today reported, so the jackpot rolled over to an estimated $467 million for Monday's drawing. The cash value of that prize is $192.4 million.

One ticket purchased in Arizona matched the five white balls but missed the Powerball. That ticket wins $1 million, the Detroit Free Press reported.

The Rollover Rule

Powerball's prize grows through a simple rollover rule: if nobody matches all five white balls and the red Powerball, the top prize carries over to the next draw and keeps increasing. That is why long stretches without a winner produce larger and larger advertised jackpots. Drawings happen three times a week—Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday—at 10:59 p.m. ET from the Florida Lottery draw studio in Tallahassee.

How the Game Works

A single Powerball play costs $2. Players choose five numbers from 1 to 69 and one Powerball number from 1 to 26. To win the jackpot, all six numbers must match. The odds are 1 in 292.2 million.

There are smaller prize tiers for partial matches. According to the Detroit Free Press:

Matched numbersPrize
5 white + PowerballJackpot
5 white$1 million
4 white + Powerball$50,000
4 white$100
3 white + Powerball$100
3 white$7
2 white + Powerball$7
1 white + Powerball$4
Powerball only$4

Players can add the Power Play option for another $1. That feature multiplies non-jackpot prizes by two, three, four, five, or ten times.

The Cash Question

The advertised jackpot is not the same as the cash payout. Monday's estimated jackpot is $467 million, but the cash value is $192.4 million. For Saturday's drawing, the estimated jackpot was $440 million with a cash value of $181.3 million.

Lottery officials list both numbers because winners can choose between a lump sum and payments over time. The cash value is the amount attached to a one-time payout. The gap between the headline number and the cash value can grow as the jackpot rolls over, which is why the cash value is the better figure for judging what a winner would actually collect.

What Comes Next

Powerball tickets cost $2 per play and are sold in 45 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The next drawing is scheduled for Monday at approximately 10:59 p.m. ET. If no one wins again, the rollover continues, and the advertised jackpot will be even larger the next time.
