Who Was Ken Urker? Gypsy Rose Blanchard’s Former Fiancé and the Father of Her Child

Ken Urker first came into Gypsy Rose Blanchard's life as a voice from outside prison. In 2017, he contacted her as a pen pal while she was serving a 10-year sentence for second-degree murder in the death of her mother, Clauddine "Dee Dee" Blanchard. Nine.com.au describes their relationship as an on-and-off romance that lasted more than a decade.

The early connection moved quickly. Urker and Blanchard became engaged in October 2018, then split in August 2019. They remained apart until after Blanchard left prison and ended her relationship with Anderson, her then-husband. In April 2024, the pair rekindled the romance and became engaged again. A prenatal DNA test eventually confirmed Urker as the biological father of Blanchard's child.

That second engagement did not lead to a settled family life. Blanchard's divorce from Anderson created legal complications around paternity, and the couple split again. Nine.com.au reports that the separation was tied to the legal complexity of paternity laws during the divorce. The DNA test had already established who the child's biological father was. Legal recognition did not automatically follow.

The most public part of his life

Urker was not a celebrity before Blanchard. His name became familiar because of her case and the media attention that followed her release. Once out of prison, Blanchard moved into the public eye quickly, giving major press interviews and appearing in Lifetime docuseries including "The Prison Confessions of Gypsy Rose Blanchard" and "Gypsy Rose: Life After Lock Up."

Urker was part of that story from the edges. He had known Blanchard before her release, during a period when her life was controlled by her mother and then by the justice system. That made the relationship unusual from the start. Pen-pal relationships between prisoners and outsiders can remain distant, but theirs became something far more serious.

The paternity question and the second split

The timeline from Nine.com.au says the couple were together for a total of four and a half years across their on-and-off romance. That matters because the legal dispute over paternity was tied to the end of Blanchard's marriage, not to the end of her history with Urker.

Nine.com.au reported that the final split happened over the legal complexity regarding paternity laws because of Blanchard's divorce from her ex-husband. A prenatal DNA test had confirmed biological paternity, but the law had not necessarily caught up with that fact.

What remains unknown

Urker died, and his cause of death has not been revealed. Beyond that, little has been publicly confirmed through the reporting reviewed here.

That unresolved status gives Urker's death a second layer. The couple's split was reportedly tied to the law, not to uncertainty about parenthood. The law is still where the story stands.
