Who Is Suzie Skinner? The Two Deaths Behind 'Death of the Pastor's Wife'
Suzie Skinner is a member of Solid Rock Church in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and the woman John-Paul Miller married after his first wife, Mica Miller, was found dead in 2024. The Netflix docuseries "Death of the Pastor's Wife" has made her connection to two deaths a central point of public attention: Mica Miller's death in 2024 and the 2021 death of Suzie's first husband, Chris Skinner.
A marriage that followed a death
Miller was the pastor of Solid Rock Church. Hindustan Times reported that he and Suzie Skinner married on June 1, 2025, in a private beach ceremony in Myrtle Beach; Today.com also confirmed the marriage. Suzie Skinner belonged to the congregation.
The relationship was a stated concern for Mica before she died. According to Hindustan Times, Mica told a friend she knew her husband was having an affair with Suzie Skinner. Miller agreed in writing to end it. Mica filed for separation on April 15, 2024. Miller was served the papers on April 25. Mica was found dead on April 27.
The death of Chris Skinner
Suzie's first husband, Chris Skinner, was paralyzed after an accident. Suzie worked as his physical therapist. Chris died in September 2021 after being found at the bottom of a community pool.
No one has been charged in Chris Skinner's death. Hindustan Times reported that the Horry County Coroner's Office reviewed the case after new information came up. In the docuseries, Chris Skinner's sister says a coroner told her he died after accidentally falling into the pool in his wheelchair. That explanation has not been tested in court.
A federal case still moving forward
The legal case against John-Paul Miller is separate but unresolved. A federal grand jury indicted him in December 2025 on one count of cyberstalking and one count of making false statements to investigators. He pleaded not guilty, and his trial has been continued to the October 2026 term.
Prosecutors, according to Time, allege a pattern of abuse that began in November 2022. The pattern included:
- Tracking Mica's car
- Placing excessive calls
- Posting nude images
- Interfering with finances
- Damaging tires
Miller admitted that he hired a private investigator. He said it was to "protect Mica from buying firearms." Prosecutors say the real purpose was to have her followed.
Miller is out on a $100,000 unsecured bond and has been ordered to wear an ankle monitor. The docuseries has brought Horry County back into the news by linking these two deaths, but the underlying questions remain. One is what will happen in the federal trial. The other is whether Chris Skinner's death was fully understood before it became part of a larger story.
