What Is the iPhone Duo, Apple's First Foldable Phone?

Apple has officially entered the foldable phone market. The iPhone Duo is the company's first foldable iPhone, and its defining feature is a hinge that lets the device change shape. Opened, it has a 7.6-inch inner display. Closed, it becomes a compact phone with a 5.4-inch outer screen.

A Phone That Changes Shape

Opened, the iPhone Duo is the thinnest iPhone Apple has ever made. Closed, its 5.4-inch outer display provides 90 percent of the screen area of the iPhone 18 Pro in a more pocketable size. Both displays share the same aspect ratio, so apps and video scale proportionally from one screen to the other. Apple says the iOS experience has been reimagined for the larger canvas, with the inner display designed for viewing content, gaming, and multitasking.

How the Glass Screen Bends Without Breaking

A bendable screen creates a problem: glass usually cracks under repeated folding stress. Apple's solution uses several layers that move independently. High-strength glass sits above and below the folding display panel. Custom adhesives let those layers glide past one another like the pages of a book, which relieves the stress created when the phone folds. A titanium plate beneath the display adds further durability, and a scratch-resistant coating protects the surface.

The display's cover layer is a custom polymer with a nano-textured finish. Apple says the polymer is up to 40 percent stiffer than other materials used in the industry, and the finish minimizes glare. The front of the device uses Ceramic Shield 2, which Apple says has three times better scratch resistance than the previous generation, while the back uses the original Ceramic Shield.

The Hinge Is Half the Story

The screen may bend, but the hinge is what makes it fold reliably. Apple's precision hinge is built from more than 100 components. It is designed to feel smooth, support the center of the display so the phone lies flat when opened, and close securely through an integrated magnet array. Inside, support ribs add structural stiffness. Antenna splits with ceramic fiber inserts reinforce the frame, which is made from grade 5 titanium with a mirror-polished finish. The hinge cover itself is 3D-printed and has a contrasting micro-blasted texture.

Price and Availability

The iPhone Duo comes in two colors: star white and night sky. Apple has not announced a price. Pre-orders begin Friday, October 16, and availability starts Friday, October 23.

Why This Matters

The iPhone Duo is not just another model in the lineup. It changes the physical shape of the iPhone, something Apple has not done since the original design matured. By fitting a 7.6-inch screen into a device that folds down to a compact 5.4-inch exterior, Apple is making its first serious bet on foldable hardware. The durability choices, from the sliding glass layers to the 100-component hinge, directly address the main reason foldables have stayed niche. Whether those choices hold up in daily use is the question that will define this device.
