What Is iOS 27? Siri AI, Camera Integration, and What to Update First

Apple has released iOS 27, the next version of the operating system that runs the iPhone. The headline feature is Siri AI, and it reaches well beyond the phone. According to Apple's announcement, Siri AI is an entirely new version of Siri powered by the next generation of Apple Intelligence. It is integrated into the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and Apple Vision Pro.

What Makes Siri AI Different

The new assistant brings personal context understanding, broad world knowledge, onscreen awareness, and systemwide app actions. That means it can follow a conversation, see what is on the screen, and complete tasks inside apps rather than simply returning a reply.

Siri AI can also pick up where you left off. A dedicated Siri app uses iCloud to privately sync conversational history across Apple products. You can start a chat on an iPhone and continue it on a Mac, iPad, Apple Watch, or Apple Vision Pro. The beta rolls out in English first, with French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish support coming in October.

A Siri Mode in the Camera App

The most visible iPhone addition is Siri mode in the Camera app. Point the camera at something, and Siri can get information about it or take action on it. Apple's examples include splitting a bill and paying a friend with Apple Cash, and adding a custom pass to Wallet. This turns the camera into an input device for the assistant, not just a tool for capturing photos.

What Apple Has Not Said

Apple has not provided a complete compatibility list in this announcement. It also does not describe the rest of the interface changes in detail. Because Siri AI is a beta, the final public release may differ. Users who rely heavily on voice automation should watch for changes before treating it as a stable replacement.

What to Update First

There is no required update order in Apple's announcement. The practical place to start is the iPhone, because that is where the Camera integration lives. If you use a Mac, iPad, Apple Watch, or Apple Vision Pro, you will still receive the same Siri AI engine. Apple's own message is broad: the assistant now works across the whole product line, and the most distinctive new feature belongs to the phone.

Check the release notes before updating older hardware. Apple's announcement focuses on the new assistant and may not list every device or market limitation.
