What the iPhone 18 Pro's Variable Aperture and Faster Chip Change for Upgraders

Summary: This article explains how the iPhone 18 Pro's mechanical variable aperture and A20 Pro chip differ from older iPhone hardware, and what those changes mean for people considering an upgrade.

A Camera That Can Physically Change Its Opening

For years, iPhone cameras have used a fixed aperture. The lens opening stayed the same size, and the camera managed light and depth through sensor technology and computational photography. The iPhone 18 Pro changes that.

Apple's announcement describes the new 48MP Fusion Main camera as the most advanced camera it has ever made, with a variable aperture that brings aperture control to iPhone for the first time. Six laser-cut blades sit inside the lens and move smoothly to adjust the size of the opening. That is a mechanical change, not a software filter.

The practical effect is simple: the camera can widen the aperture to f/1.48 when light is low, or narrow it to f/4 to keep more of a scene in focus. Apple says this makes it easier to capture group shots with everyone sharp while still offering shallow depth of field for portraits.

There is also a manual side to this. According to Ars Technica's independent reporting, users can adjust the aperture themselves and set a specific shutter speed when taking a photo. That hands over creative control that previous iPhones simply did not offer at the hardware level.

A Chip Built for Sustained Work

Alongside the camera, Apple introduced the A20 Pro chip. Ars Technica reports that it is the first 2nm chip for an iPhone. The new 6-core CPU has two super-cores that Apple says are up to 20 percent faster, plus four efficiency cores. The 7-core GPU is up to 40 percent faster than the A19 Pro.

Memory bandwidth matters as much as raw speed. Apple says the A20 Pro has 50 percent more memory bandwidth than the A19 Pro, which helps when the GPU and Neural Accelerators are working through heavy tasks at the same time.

The chip also gets a thermal upgrade. Apple says a redesigned vapor chamber has three times more surface area than the one in the iPhone 17 Pro and delivers up to 40 percent higher sustained performance. That is a different kind of improvement from peak speed. Sustained performance is what you feel during long gaming sessions, video exports, or demanding augmented reality work, when older phones tend to slow down as they heat up.

What That Means for Someone Holding an Older iPhone

For anyone using an iPhone 15 or an earlier model, the shift is more significant than a typical yearly refresh. The variable aperture is a genuinely new physical capability, not just a better sensor with smarter processing. It changes how depth of field and low-light shots are captured at the moment the photo is taken.

The A20 Pro matters in a different way. Moving from an older chip to one with a 2nm process, a faster GPU, and better sustained performance means the phone is less likely to throttle under load. That combination of camera control and longer-lasting performance is what separates this generation from the fixed-aperture iPhones that came before it.
