What Happens After the FA Cup Second Qualifying Round Draw?
The Football Association has confirmed the second qualifying round draw for the Emirates FA Cup, and it has sent two non-league clubs in very different directions. Darlington must travel to Redcar Town. Hereford will head to Stafford Rangers. The draw sets up matches to be played on the weekend of 18–20 September, with one key fixture already fixed for the Saturday afternoon.
A Northern Trip for Darlington
Darlington's club statement confirmed that the draw sent them to Redcar Town, a Northern League first division club. Redcar reached this stage by beating Blyth Spartans last weekend, which means Darlington will meet a side in form. The tie will be played over the weekend of 18, 19 and 20 September, but an exact kickoff day has not been announced.
Hereford's Away Test
Hereford's tie has a firmer schedule. The Bulls will play Stafford Rangers at Marston Road on Saturday, September 19, at 3pm. That makes it a meeting between different levels of the football pyramid. Rangers compete in the Northern Premier League Division One West, which is two levels below Hereford.
League position is not the only factor, though. Stafford Rangers sit sixth in their division after winning three of their four league matches. They have also arrived at this round with three home wins in the FA Cup: 5-0 against Tividale, 2-1 against Matlock Town and 3-0 against Northampton ON Chenecks.
That run gives Hereford a clear warning. The gap in divisions is real, but Rangers have shown they can score heavily and protect a lead at home. A cup tie at Marston Road is exactly the kind of challenge that can produce an upset.
What the Draw Sets Up
For both Darlington and Hereford, the second qualifying round is the next hurdle in a competition that rewards the team that performs best on the day. The draw has already done its main work by establishing the venues and the weekend. Now the focus shifts to preparation.
Darlington's trip to Redcar remains the less settled of the two because the exact kickoff time has yet to be confirmed. Hereford's schedule is clearer: Saturday, September 19, with a 3pm start. Redcar have already beaten Blyth Spartans, so they know what it takes to get past a higher-ranked opponent. Stafford Rangers have shown what home support can do for them.
The winners will have earned a place in the next round. The losers will be left to reflect on an early exit from a competition that matters to clubs at this level.
