What George Russell’s Azerbaijan GP Victory Reveals About a Chaotic F1 Season

George Russell won the Azerbaijan Grand Prix at the Baku City Circuit by one tenth of a second, holding off Max Verstappen in a race that Formula1.com described as chaotic. Six drivers retired. It was Russell’s third win of the season.
A Win Built on Restarts
Russell started from pole and led most of the race. The first major disruption came when Williams driver Alex Albon made an error that brought out the safety car. Russell survived the restart, but the race was halted again when Franco Colapinto locked up and collected his Alpine teammate Pierre Gasly. Lando Norris, the defending world champion, was also caught in the incident and became one of the six retirements.
McLaren’s afternoon got worse from there. Oscar Piastri had been running in podium positions for much of the race, but a late lock-up dropped him out of the points.
The closing laps turned into a straight fight between Russell and Verstappen. Verstappen could not find a way past and finished second, leaving him without a win this season. Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar took third, with Charles Leclerc fourth.
A Big Shift in the Title Race
The most important result may have been fifth place. Kimi Antonelli, the championship leader and Russell’s Mercedes teammate, started 16th after clipping a barrier in qualifying. Formula1.com noted that Antonelli made the most of the chaos to improve from 16th to the points. The Guardian called the recovery an impressive feat of damage limitation.
Russell’s win cut Antonelli’s championship lead to 66 points with eight race meetings remaining. That was a swing of 15 points. It also gave Russell a boost at a moment when his season has been uneven. The Guardian noted that Russell has suffered poor luck this year and has struggled to adjust to the new regulations and cars as quickly as Antonelli.
A Season Still Hard to Predict
Baku showed how quickly a Formula 1 race can change. One mistake by Albon, one lock-up by Colapinto and one late slide from Piastri were enough to scramble the order. With eight meetings still to go, the championship remains open.
