What Does the iPhone 18 Pro Max's Variable Aperture Do?

For years, the main camera on a flagship phone had a fixed iris. Light and depth of field were locked at one setting. Apple's iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max change that with a mechanical variable aperture built into their 48-megapixel Fusion main camera. It lets the camera physically open and close, giving photographers a choice between four aperture settings.

A Tiny Iris With Six Blades

Inside the main camera module, six laser-cut blades form a small iris. They move smoothly to adjust the size of the opening. The iPhone 18 Pro Max can shoot at f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8, and f/4. Apple says the camera can automatically adjust for depth of field and lighting. Photographers can also manually select one of the four settings in the Camera app, and Apple provides an API for developers who want aperture control inside their own apps.

Why the Widest Setting Matters Most

A wider aperture lets in more light, and it also reduces depth of field. Apple's f/1.48 maximum is the key number. According to The Verge, the previous generation Pro iPhone cameras used f/1.7. The move to f/1.48 should improve low-light performance and create a slightly shallower depth of field, which can make subjects stand out more from the background.

The narrower settings do a different job. Apple says f/1.8 is optimized for portraits, balancing light gathering with depth of field. At f/4, more of the scene stays in focus, which helps with group shots. The Verge cautions that f/4 is unlikely to deliver the noticeably sharper results seen on full-size cameras, aside from possible sunstar effects in specific lighting.

How It Compares With the Galaxy S26 Ultra

Samsung's Galaxy S26 Ultra takes a more conventional route. Engadget's comparison describes the S26 Ultra as using a 200-megapixel main sensor, a 50-megapixel ultra-wide, and two telephoto lenses at 3x and 5x. No adjustable aperture is mentioned. The iPhone 18 Pro Max has a single telephoto lens at 4x. That means Samsung leans on resolution and dual telephoto reach, while Apple offers optical aperture control and a brighter main lens.

What the Change Means for Phone Photography

The practical benefit of the variable aperture is flexibility. Exposure can be adjusted optically, not just through software, and depth of field becomes adjustable. The biggest upgrade, however, appears to be the f/1.48 maximum aperture rather than the ability to stop down. That wider opening should make a real difference in low light. The mechanical iris also opens the door for developers to build something new, but for most users the brighter maximum aperture is likely the part that matters.
