How Pete Crow-Armstrong’s Two Homers Made Cubs History

Readers will learn why Pete Crow-Armstrong’s two-homer game against the White Sox was statistically unusual, how it completed his second straight 30-30 season, and what the feat means for his place in Cubs history.

A Game No One Had Seen Before

Pete Crow-Armstrong had a night that looked good in the box score and even better in the record books. Facing the Chicago White Sox on August 17, 2026, the Cubs outfielder hit a leadoff home run in the first inning. In the 10th, he hit a two-run walk-off home run. He finished 4-for-5 with three RBIs, two runs scored, and a stolen base.

According to Sports Illustrated, no MLB player had ever combined five times on base, four hits, three extra-base hits, a stolen base, a leadoff homer, and a walk-off homer in the same game. Sports Illustrated also noted that Crow-Armstrong became the first player since Vic Power on May 7, 1957 to homer on the first pitch his team saw and the last pitch his team saw. TMSPN reported that he is the seventh player in MLB history with a leadoff and a walk-off homer in one game, the first since Chris Young in 2010.

A Second Straight 30-30 Season

The second homer gave Crow-Armstrong 30 home runs. The stolen base, combined with the rest of his season, put him at 30 steals for the second consecutive year, per TMSPN. That places him in the back-to-back 30-30 club with Willie Mays, Bobby Bonds, Ron Gant, Vladimir Guerrero, Bobby Witt Jr., and Barry Bonds.

For the Cubs, that is new history. Before Crow-Armstrong, Sammy Sosa was the only Cub with a 30-30 season. Crow-Armstrong is the first Cub to do it in consecutive seasons.

At 22, he is also only the third player in MLB history with multiple 30-30 seasons before turning 24, and the second after Bobby Witt Jr. to do it in back-to-back years. Sports Illustrated noted that only Barry Bonds had previously paired back-to-back 30-30 seasons with back-to-back Gold Gloves; Crow-Armstrong is on pace to become the second.

What the Night Says About His Season

The individual game fits into a broader pattern. Crow-Armstrong is tied for the MLB lead with eight go-ahead or game-tying hits in the seventh inning or later this season. His eight career games with 10 or more total bases are the most by any player aged 24 or younger since 1900, per Sports Illustrated. Only Crow-Armstrong and Jimmie Foxx have had multiple seasons with at least four games of 10-plus total bases since 1900.

The walk-off homer did not just end a game. It capped a performance that combines power, speed, and late-inning production in a way the Cubs had not seen from one of their own. That makes the night more than a memorable August win. It is a marker of how quickly Crow-Armstrong is turning into one of baseball’s most complete young players.
