How Pakistan and Bangladesh Reached the Asian Games 2026 Semi-Final Without a Match
The first men's cricket semi-final at the 2026 Asian Games is a Twenty20 match between two teams that have not played a ball in Japan. Pakistan and Bangladesh meet in Nisshin on the morning of 1 October with a place in the gold-medal match on the line. The path there was shaped by rain and seeding, not by results.
A knockout round washed out
According to SportsAdda's match preview, all four men's quarter-finals were abandoned without a ball bowled. Bangladesh's match against Malaysia was called off two hours before the toss, and the players were told not to travel to the ground. Pakistan's quarter-final was one of the washouts too. Both teams had been given byes into the quarter-finals as seeded sides, so they advanced on rankings when the matches were lost to rain. Every men's semi-finalist reached the last four that way. The first cricket either Pakistan or Bangladesh plays in Japan will therefore be this semi-final.
The last time they met, it ended with one over
At the Hangzhou Asian Games in 2023, Bangladesh and Pakistan played for bronze. Bangladesh needed 20 runs from the final over. Yasir Ali hit Pakistan spinner Sufiyan Muqeem for 16 from the first four balls, including two sixes, and Rakibul Hasan scored the winning four off the last ball. Both Yasir and Muqeem are in Japan for this tournament. The rematch carries a bigger prize: a spot in the final instead of a bronze-medal playoff.
Squads with different shapes
Bangladesh captain Litton Das is without Najmul Hossain Shanto, who was ruled out of the tournament after arriving in Nagoya with a fever and an infection. Litton still has a full T20 attack around him in Mustafizur Rahman, Shoriful Islam, Nasum Ahmed and Rishad Hossain. Tawhid Hridoy and Tanzid Hasan bat around him.
Pakistan left most of its senior players at home. Salman Ali Agha, Babar Azam, Shaheen Shah Afridi and Shadab Khan are not in the squad. Sahibzada Farhan is captain instead. He was the leading run-scorer at the T20 World Cup earlier in the year, with 383 runs at an average of 76.60. Saim Ayub, Usman Khan and Haider Ali join him in the batting order, and Abrar Ahmed and Muqeem lead the spin attack. Four players in the squad have not played a T20 international.
Why the wet outfield may decide it
On paper, Pakistan has the stronger batting and Bangladesh the deeper bowling. After a week of waiting, the side that adjusts quickest to a wet Nisshin outfield could hold the advantage. The forecast for the semi-final day was better, but this tournament has already shown how quickly rain can change a match before it starts.
The winner reaches the gold-medal match on 3 October. Bangladesh won gold at the Asian Games in 2010 and bronze in 2014 and 2023. Pakistan went home from Hangzhou without a medal, and Muqeem bowled the over that decided it. This semi-final gives both teams a chance to rewrite that recent record.
