Why Najee Harris's Giants Debut Against the Rams Could Reshape the Backfield

Najee Harris is listed as active for the New York Giants' Week 2 game against the Los Angeles Rams, and reports out of New Jersey say he is in "a good spot" to make his team debut. CBS Sports' fantasy football desk confirmed Harris as active for the Monday night contest. NJ.com reported that the new Giants player is likely to take the field against the Rams, and Roundtable's coverage described him as a new weapon New York could deploy.

What "Active" Actually Means

In the NFL, being active on game day is more than a formality. Teams must submit an official list of players eligible to play, and anyone not on it is inactive and cannot enter the game, even as a substitute. When Harris is active, the coaching staff believes he can handle the playbook, the tempo, and the physical demands of a real game. For a player who joined the team during the season, that status is not automatic. He has to show he knows the protections and the run schemes before he is trusted with carries.

Where He Fits in the Giants' Backfield

The addition of a veteran running back creates new options in the backfield. Harris has not taken a regular-season snap with the Giants yet, so his specific role is unknown. The value of a late acquisition often comes down to how quickly he can absorb the game plan and whether the coaching staff trusts him in pass protection. The Rams' defensive front can pressure the quarterback, which makes a running back who can block more valuable.

That could mean work on third downs or in two-minute situations. It could also mean a few early carries to test how the defense reacts. The exact distribution of carries and snaps is not certain. But when a team declares a new player active, it usually intends to use him. For a backfield still defining its identity, Harris's presence alone forces the Rams to spend part of their preparation accounting for him.
