Mütterrente III: Who Qualifies, How Much It Adds, and When Back Payments Arrive

Germany’s Mütterrente III is the final planned step in equalising pension credits for child-rearing. It does not create a separate pension. Instead, it adds recognised child-rearing periods to a person’s statutory pension record.

The change mainly affects parents whose children were born before January 1, 1992. Under the previous rules, those children generated up to 30 months of credited child-rearing time, compared with up to 36 months for children born from 1992 onward. Mütterrente III raises the earlier entitlement to as much as 36 months per child. The Deutsche Rentenversicherung says the change can benefit mothers and fathers, because parents may divide child-rearing periods between them. (deutsche-rentenversicherung.de)

The extra credit is worth roughly half a pension point

The additional six months correspond to half a pension point for each qualifying child. The exact euro value changes when Germany adjusts pensions, so the final amount for 2027 cannot yet be stated with certainty. Using the current value cited by the pension authority, half a point is worth about €20.40 per month before deductions. That means three qualifying children would currently imply roughly €61.20 more per month, not a fixed one-off payment. (deutsche-rentenversicherung.de)

The often-quoted figure of about €735 refers to a possible 12-month retroactive payment for three children, calculated using today’s reference value. The actual amount may differ because the pension value can change and because not every parent receives the full 36 months for every child.

Why the payment comes later than the legal change

The law takes effect on January 1, 2027, but the Deutsche Rentenversicherung has said that the technical changes will not be completed in time for immediate payment. Existing pensioners are expected to receive the increase in 2028, retroactively for 2027. People whose pension begins during 2027 should also receive the additional credit from their pension start date, with implementation handled later. (deutsche-rentenversicherung.de)

Do parents need to file a new application?

Usually, no. Existing pensioners generally do not need to submit a separate Mütterrente III application. The pension authority plans to update qualifying records automatically. People who have already documented their child-rearing periods should likewise not need to act again.

The important exception is an incomplete pension record. Someone who has never had child-rearing periods recorded should arrange a Kontenklärung, or pension account clarification, with the Deutsche Rentenversicherung. At the latest, the issue can be reviewed when the person applies for a pension. (deutsche-rentenversicherung.de)

Because the increase forms part of the statutory pension, it may affect means-tested benefits such as basic income support or housing benefit. The BMAS says the reform will be financed through federal tax funding rather than higher pension contributions. (bmas.de)
