How Messi's Argentina Career Ended Without a Fairytale

Lionel Messi's international career has reportedly ended after Argentina's 2026 World Cup final loss to Spain. This article explains the reports around his retirement, the legacy he leaves, and what Argentina must do next.

The Final, Settled by One Swift Moment

Argentina lost the World Cup final 1-0 to Spain after extra time. Ferran Torres scored 37 seconds into the second period of extra time. Spain won in front of 80,663 fans at MetLife Stadium.

Messi had just 15 touches in the first half and 54 across the entire match. At the final whistle he fought back tears while Argentina fans applauded and Spain lifted the trophy. He needed to compose himself three times during the post-match press conference, according to The Athletic.

"I already cried my heart out in the dressing room," he said.

A Dressing Room Announcement

After the match, Messi told his Argentina teammates in the dressing room that he was retiring from international football, according to Nigerian outlet Nigeria Football. No official statement had been issued by Messi or the Argentine Football Association at the time of those reports. The Athletic reported that the final was his last game for Argentina.

There is history here. Messi announced his retirement from international football after the 2016 Copa América final at the same stadium, then reversed that decision 47 days later. Whether this version sticks is not yet clear.

The Legacy Messi Leaves Argentina

Messi leaves as the first man to play in six World Cups, with 21 goals in those tournaments. He also leaves with the international honours that had seemed beyond him for much of his career: the 2021 Copa América, the 2022 Finalissima against Italy and the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

That 2022 World Cup seemed like the natural ending. Instead, he returned for the 2026 final and lost.

Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni made clear what the country is losing. "I hope that everyone feels proud of him, of what he's achieved because he's the best football player ever stepping foot on a pitch," Scaloni said, according to ESPN.

What Happens to Argentina Now

Messi's club career remains separate from the international question. He currently plays for Inter Miami in Major League Soccer. At Barcelona he won 35 trophies and scored more than 670 official goals, according to ESPN.

The biggest change is for Argentina. Its next World Cup cycle begins without the player Scaloni put above every footballer who has played. The loss to Spain means the decision lands hours after a defeat in a final, not after a triumph.

Until Messi or the Argentine Football Association issues a formal statement, the word "retirement" carries an asterisk. He has taken it back before. This time, a nation and a sport wait to see whether it sticks.
