Patrick Mahomes' Knee Comeback vs. Broncos: What a Cleared Quarterback Still Has to Prove
Summary: This article explains how Patrick Mahomes went from a December knee injury to a clean injury status for the Chiefs' Monday night game, and why the Denver Broncos defense makes his return a genuine test.
The Long Road Back
Patrick Mahomes is officially cleared. NFL.com reported that the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback had no injury status for the team's Monday night game against the Denver Broncos, ending months of uncertainty about whether he could return at all.
Mahomes tore the ACL and LCL in his left knee during a December loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. The Chiefs then lost their final three games without him and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2014.
Mahomes did not play in the preseason. He continued to practice, though. Andy Reid described a player who had not missed a day, adding that Mahomes looked normal while running and throwing apart from a brace on his leg. The coach put the chance of Mahomes playing at "very good," with the usual caveat that something unexpected could still happen before kickoff.
Travis Kelce saw the turning point long before the clearance. The tight end said Mahomes flipped a switch after surgery. "You saw that switch flip when he had the surgery, how he was going to be determined to get healthy for the season," Kelce told reporters. He also said he expects the same competitive version of Mahomes once the ball is snapped.
The First Real Test
Being cleared is not the same as being proven ready. A practice field is controlled. A game carries live pass rushers, contact, and the kind of pressure that makes a quarterback instinctively move.
The Broncos' defense presents an immediate challenge, as KMBC's pregame coverage noted. The first real test will come under game conditions, where months of preparation have to translate into Mahomes's familiar game-day performance. The question is not whether he will start. It is whether he can still move the way his game requires when a defense is hunting him.
What's at Stake
Kansas City watched its season end without Mahomes. His return gives the Chiefs a chance to reset after a collapse, but only if the knee holds up under live contact. The injury report is behind him. The next test is on the field, Monday night, against a defense that becomes the first real measure of his recovery.
