What Happened at Lionel-Groulx Station and How the Green Line Recovered
A 911 call came in around 11 a.m. on Saturday. The caller reported that a man had fallen onto the tracks at Lionel-Groulx station. An STM subway train struck him moments later.
The man was in his 40s. Early reports described him as being in critical condition. CityNews Montreal later confirmed that he had died. TVA Nouvelles reported that the death occurred on the rails after an accidental fall.
STM spokesperson Renaud Martel-Théorêt said the train could not stop before the man made it back to the platform. "The person's death has been confirmed," he told reporters. The transit agency is investigating what caused the fall. "Everything suggests that this was, unfortunately, an accidental fall — not intentional," Martel-Théorêt added. Montreal police said no criminal activity was suspected.
The Emergency Response
Urgences-santé sent two operations commanders, an advanced-care paramedic, and an ambulance to the station. Spokesperson Pierre-Luc Lefrançois said first responders were unable to resuscitate the man.
The incident forced a major disruption on the Green Line. The STM suspended service between Lionel-Groulx and Berri-UQAM while emergency crews and investigators worked at the scene.
The Return to Normal Service
The Green Line disruption ended after the STM confirmed the interruption was over. CTV News reported that service had returned. The investigation into the fall continues.
Standing Behind the Yellow Line
The STM used the incident to restate basic platform safety. Passengers should not stand too close to the edge and should remain behind the yellow line on the platform floor. It is simple advice, but the events at Lionel-Groulx showed how quickly a moment on the edge can become a fatal accident.
