What Travelers Need to Know After the Lake Garda Bella Italia Campsite Fire

A fire tore through the Bella Italia campsite in Peschiera del Garda, on the southern shore of Lake Garda, in the early morning. According to Tagesschau, the blaze destroyed large parts of the site. Three rows of bungalows were reduced to ashes, with roughly 30 wooden holiday homes burned down along with guests' cars and at least one motorhome.

The property markets itself as a five-star facility aimed mainly at families, based on reporting from Hessenschau. Residents use a mix of pitches for motorhomes, caravans, and tents, as well as numerous apartments on the grounds.

How the Fire Started and Spread

Italian authorities say the fire broke out around six in the morning in one bungalow before spreading to neighboring units, according to the Berliner Morgenpost. The exact cause is still unclear, and police are investigating. Initial official statements suggest an accident, but nothing has been confirmed.

Firefighting was made harder by the presence of gas cylinders scattered around the campsite. At least one explosion was heard during the operation, and crews had to assume more could follow. The Italian fire brigade eventually brought the fire under control.

The Human Toll

A total of 24 people were treated by rescue services, Tagesschau reported. One guest suffered severe burns to both legs, and seven people were taken to hospital emergency rooms. Among them was a family from Switzerland with three children, according to Hessenschau.

Some of the most effective early response came from off-duty professionals. Four firefighters from Dietzenbach in Hesse were holidaying on the campsite when the fire started. They began fighting the flames before the local fire brigade arrived. The president of the Veneto region, Luca Zaia, publicly thanked them for their intervention, Hessenschau reported.

What Travelers Should Consider

Lake Garda is one of Italy's most popular holiday destinations, drawing large numbers of tourists from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Events like this are rare, but they come with practical lessons.

Fire risks on campsites often involve cooking equipment, electrical installations, and stored gas. Guests should know where fire extinguishers and emergency exits are located before settling in. If local fire crews are delayed, immediate action from nearby campers can make a difference, as this incident showed.

For those with plans to stay in bungalow-style accommodations, checking the feedback history of the specific property is worthwhile. The cause of the Bella Italia fire remains under investigation, so any safety recommendations beyond basic precautions are still speculative.

Travelers with existing bookings at Bella Italia should contact the operator directly for status updates and rebooking options. The campsite remains known as a family-friendly destination, but full recovery from a fire of this scale takes time.
