West Indies' Shai Hope framed the challenge in straightforward terms. "Whenever you come to India and you want to play against the best team, win against the best team," he said, as quoted by the ICC. "It will definitely be an added motivation." He also described playing India in their backyard as a challenge the team needs to "grasp and embrace."
Form gap
West Indies arrive after a 1-1 World Test Championship series draw at home against Pakistan. Their most recent ODI assignment ended in a 3-2 home loss to New Zealand. India's recent record, by contrast, includes a Champions Trophy title and a World Cup final appearance. The difference in results is the gap Hope wants to close.

The BCCI has published a pitch report for the first ODI, a pre-match guide to how the surface in Thiruvananthapuram may behave. Teams will use it to settle on their approach. But the bigger questions are structural. For West Indies, these three matches are a last chance to make their mark before automatic World Cup qualification is settled. For India, they are a chance to test squad depth outside a multi-team tournament.
The series opener will not decide the 2027 World Cup.
