How Wordle Hint Posts Work: Spoiler-Free Clues and the Answer to Puzzle #1940

Wordle hands every player the same five-letter word and gives them six tries. It is a simple arrangement, but it creates a problem: if you get stuck, the answer is everywhere. The New York Times game does not offer official in-game hints. That is where daily guide pages come in.

CNET's Wordle guide for puzzle #1940 opens with a clear warning. The answer begins with a letter that rarely appears at the start of an English word. That letter is U. The answer, the guide confirms, is UNCAP.

The warning matters because UNCAP is not a common daily word. It is a verb meaning to remove a cap or cover. More importantly, U is not a typical starting letter. Most players build their opening guesses around consonants such as S, C, B, or T. A word that begins with U breaks that pattern. Someone who uses the same starting word every day may learn very little from the first attempt.

Difficulty is a human judgment. CNET says this puzzle might be tough. That assessment changes behavior before a single letter is typed. Solvers who know the first letter is rare can set aside their usual starter and focus on figuring out where the vowels sit. The hint does not spoil the answer, but it reshapes the starting approach.

Puzzle numbers add another layer of precision. Wordle assigns a number to every daily game. #1940 identifies Sunday's puzzle, while #1938 identifies Friday's. The numbering system keeps each hint post exact. A player in one time zone may still be catching up on the previous day's word; the number removes any doubt about which answer belongs to which game.

Hint pages work because they hold the answer back until the player is ready. The first clues stay broad, the final clue narrows the field, and the answer appears only after that boundary has been reached. For puzzle #1940, the path runs from a rare opening letter to a five-letter word that proves why the game stays interesting day after day.
