How Did Alexander Zverev Reach Tennis World No. 1?

Alexander Zverev is about to reach the top of men’s tennis for the first time. The 29-year-old German will become world No. 1 by the end of the season, according to reports from BILD and sportschau.de. That makes him the first German man to hold the top spot since Boris Becker.

Becker reached No. 1 in 1991, and he did it twice that year. He spent 12 total weeks atop the rankings during his career. Zverev, by contrast, has climbed gradually. He won the French Open and the US Open in the same season, giving him the points base needed to make the final push.

Why the ranking is changing now

The ATP ranking is a rolling 52-week system. Players earn points at tournaments, and those points fall away after a year. Jannik Sinner has been No. 1 since April, but the Italian is out with a knee injury and will not return until 2027. That means his points cannot be defended, so his total will shrink.

Carlos Alcaraz also stood in the way. The Spaniard lost early at the Shanghai Masters, beaten by Belgium’s Zizou Bergs in straight sets, 5-7, 6-7 (4-7). That result cleared much of the remaining obstacle between Zverev and the top spot. According to DIE ZEIT, Zverev will overtake Sinner even without further help.

The ranking math that decides the timing

Zverev does not need to win every remaining match. The arithmetic is more specific. According to BILD, he can secure No. 1 as early as November 2 if he wins the Shanghai Masters and then reaches the semifinals at the ATP event in Vienna in late October. A Shanghai final plus a Vienna title would also be enough. If neither happens, he can still take top spot by the end of the season, because Sinner has no points left to protect.

What it means for German tennis

Reaching No. 1 is a different kind of record from winning a Grand Slam. It reflects consistency across the entire tour, not just one fortnight. For Zverev, the change also places him in Becker's company. Becker had 12 weeks at No. 1, and BILD reports that Zverev could pass that mark early in 2027 if he holds the position. He would also enter next season as the player everyone else is chasing.

The ranking change is not just a personal milestone. It confirms that Zverev’s current season, with major titles at Roland Garros and the US Open, was no fluke. The numbers say he has been the best player on the tour over the past year. That is why the No. 1 ranking matters: it is the ATP’s own judgment, based on results, that Zverev currently sits above everyone else.
