What Is the Deutsche Bahn Family Ticket at €99.99?

Get the facts about Deutsche Bahn's permanent €99.99 family ticket, from its summer test to the exact booking and reservation details, and find out which eligibility and route questions have not yet been answered.

From a summer trial to a permanent offer

Germany's state-owned rail operator launched the family ticket as a limited offer during the school summer holidays. A family could buy a flat-rate ticket for a return journey instead of paying separate fares for each traveller.

The experiment drew enough demand to change the company's plans. Deutsche Bahn chief Palla said the summer offer brought 100,000 more families on board than in the previous year. Manager Magazin quotes her saying the company decided to take the ticket permanently into its product range.

The permanent phase starts on 1 November. Sales open on 26 October, under the same conditions as the summer version, with the seat reservation included. Bild's coverage of the announcement also carries the €99.99 price.

What the 99.99 euros buy

The headline detail is the price: 99.99 euros for a return trip for a family. According to Manager Magazin, the price covers the ICE reservation. Families do not have to add a separate fee to secure seats on ICE trains.

That gives the offer a clear fixed cost at a time when most rail fares move with demand, booking time, and route. The reservation being bundled in is also useful for groups, because travelling together usually means paying extra for seat assignments.

The ticket is no longer a seasonal extra. From late October, it moves into DB's regular range.

The details DB has not confirmed

The public reporting so far does not define what counts as a family. It does not say whether one adult with children, two adults with children, or different household arrangements all qualify. It also does not state how many children can travel on one ticket.

Route coverage and travel-day restrictions are equally unclear. The reports do not say whether the ticket works on every ICE route, whether any peak-period limits apply, or how far in advance families must book. Deutsche Bahn says the permanent offer starts under the same conditions as the summer ticket, so the summer rules may carry over, but that has not been spelled out.

Why the price point matters

A flat 99.99 euro family return fare is a deliberate anchor. It lets a family know the travel cost before they start comparing individual tickets. The inclusion of the reserved seat removes one of the add-ons that usually pushes a family's final rail bill upward.

Palla's explanation is straightforward: the pilot worked. The company counted a clear rise in family passengers during the summer holidays and decided to keep the product available rather than wait for the next vacation period. For families, the offer now shifts from a seasonal headline to a permanent option, even though the full terms still need to be published.
