Crystal Lake: How the Friday the 13th Prequel Revisits Jason’s Origin

The Slasher Who Wasn't the Killer

The first Friday the 13th movie ends on a twist that still defines the franchise. Jason Voorhees, the name most people associate with the series, is not the killer in the 1980 original. His mother, Pamela, is the one who murders camp counselors and other young people, acting in revenge after her son drowns at Camp Crystal Lake. The new series Crystal Lake takes that twist as its starting point.

What the Prequel Does Differently

Sky Group has confirmed that Crystal Lake will drop all episodes on Sky and the streaming service NOW on 19 October. The show was created by Brad Caleb Kane, who is also writer, executive producer and showrunner. Kane's previous series include It: Welcome to Derry, Tokyo Vice and Warrior. He joins A24, original Friday the 13th writer Victor Miller, and Horror, Inc., the company behind the Jason Universe, in bringing the story to the screen. ComicBook.com reports that the series premieres on Peacock on 15 October 2026, placing the US launch in the same month as the international one.

Linda Cardellini plays Pamela Voorhees, described by Sky as a single mother still unable to shake her grief almost a year after her young, sickly son drowned. Two strangers arrive at her door and begin digging into her past. Their questions set off a disturbing chain of events, leaving the townspeople to wonder who Pamela really is.

The story deliberately focuses on the character who actually killed in the first movie. The title points to the location where the tragedy happened, treating the lake as the origin point of the entire mythos.

What Remains Unknown

Victor Miller's involvement matters because he wrote the 1980 screenplay, tying the series directly to the original text. Kane's work on It: Welcome to Derry, meanwhile, shows a history of expanding pre-existing horror worlds.

The available sources do not confirm how many episodes the season contains, whether another season is planned, or how far the show will go in depicting Jason's later transformation. The premise is clear, though: Crystal Lake is a prequel about the mother who became the first killer, not the son who would inherit the mask.
