What Is College Football Week 0 and Why Does the Season Start Early?

College football no longer waits for the full first Saturday. Week 0 is the abbreviated slate of FBS games played before the official opening weekend, and it has become a regular feature of the calendar. The games count in the standings. They also give teams a head start on the rest of the country.

Week 0 exists mainly as a scheduling carve-out. Hawaii gets early-season flexibility because of the travel demands of playing in the Pacific, and programs that agree to international games or need to manage open dates can also begin a week sooner. The exact eligibility rules vary by conference and season, so Week 0 is not available to everyone. But for the teams that do play, the early kickoff is a real competitive tool.

A Revenge Game in Ireland

The headliner is North Carolina against TCU in Ireland, the first FBS game on the schedule. Bill Belichick enters his second season as UNC's coach after a 4-8 debut, and the Tar Heels get a chance to avenge a 48-14 loss to the Horned Frogs in last season's opener. TCU brings quarterback Jaden Craig, the former Harvard passer who left as the program's all-time leader in passing yards and touchdowns. UNC, meanwhile, has named Billy Edwards Jr. as its starter; injury cost him most of the previous season at Wisconsin.

The Transfer Portal Has Already Moved

Roster turnover makes Week 0 harder to handicap than a typical opening Saturday. Memphis, under first-year head coach Charles Huff, added more than 50 players through the transfer portal and must replace quarterback Brendon Lewis and leading receiver Cortez Braham Jr. The opponent, UNLV, offers contrast. Dan Mullen's Rebels have gone 10-4 in three straight seasons, reached the Mountain West Championship Game, and appeared in a bowl each year, while averaging 34.07 points per game. That gap in continuity is why this mid-major matchup carries College Football Playoff implications for the teams chasing an access berth.

Elsewhere, NC State and Virginia meet in an early ACC game that could shape the conference pecking order. North Dakota State makes its FBS debut against Jacksonville State, a program that has won nine games in each of the last three seasons.

Geography Part of the Test

San José State visits USC in conditions that are part of the story: forecast heat and smoky haze at a stadium where the Trojans hold a significant home-field advantage. Hawaii gets its own travel test, flying more than 2,400 miles to face Stanford with a three-hour body-clock shift. Those are the kinds of details that can tilt a Week 0 game when teams are still finding their identities.

Why Week 0 Matters

Week 0 gives playoff contenders and mid-major hopefuls an extra data point before the committee builds its resume. It also lets coaches answer quarterback questions and correct early-season issues with more games still available. The scoreboard counts the same, but the calendar advantage is real. For fans, it is the first chance to watch football that actually decides something.
