Champions League Draw 2026-27: Dates, Format, and What Fans Need to Know
The 2026–27 UEFA Champions League league phase draw takes place on Thursday, 27 August 2026, at 17:00 BST in Monaco. This is the third season under the expanded 36-team format introduced in 2024. Here is what fans should know about the draw process, the rules that shape it, and how to follow the action.
When and Where Does the Draw Happen?
The draw will be held at the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco. UEFA typically stages the event there each August. In the United Kingdom, broadcast coverage will be carried by TNT Sports. The draw will also be streamed live on UEFA’s website and app. A total of 36 teams enter the league phase, with 29 already qualified from the previous season and the remaining seven spots determined by play-offs completed on 25–26 August.
How the Draw Works: Pots and Rules
The 36 teams are divided into four pots based on UEFA’s club coefficient ranking, which aggregates results over the five seasons ending in 2025–26. Pot 1 contains the highest-ranked sides, including defending champions Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Liverpool, Manchester City, Inter Milan, Arsenal, Barcelona, and Atlético Madrid. Pot 2 features clubs such as Manchester United, Aston Villa, Borussia Dortmund, and Roma. Pot 3 includes Feyenoord, Napoli, RB Leipzig, and others. Pot 4 holds the lowest-ranked qualifiers.
Each team will be drawn to face eight different opponents: two from each pot. Four of those matches will be at home, four away. Teams from the same national association cannot be drawn against each other in the league phase. A new rule introduced on 26 August also prevents any club from hosting the same opponent in three consecutive league phases. For example, Liverpool cannot draw Real Madrid at home, though the fixture could still happen in Madrid.
Once the pot assignments are locked, a supercomputer randomly generates each team’s eight opponents in seconds. The entire procedure usually takes under an hour.
What the League Phase Format Means for Fans
The 36 teams play a single standings table. The top eight advance directly to the round of 16. Teams finishing ninth to 24th enter a two-legged knockout play-off, with those placed ninth to 16th seeded and playing the return leg at home. The bottom 12 teams are eliminated entirely; they do not drop into the Europa League.
Matchdays are scheduled between 8 September 2026 and 27 January 2027. Each club’s fixture list will be released shortly after the draw. The format guarantees every team plays eight unique opponents, increasing variety compared to the old group stage where clubs faced the same three rivals twice.
Why the Draw Matters
The pot placement directly influences a club’s path. Pot 1 sides avoid the other heavyweights in the draw but still face strong teams from lower pots. Pot 4 clubs know they will meet two of the top nine coefficients. The coefficient ranking system also encourages consistent European performance across five years. For returning clubs like Aston Villa and Manchester United, seeded in Pot 2, the draw determines how many elite opponents they must navigate to reach the knockout rounds.
