How to Stay Safe During Severe Thunderstorms in Bavaria

Summer thunderstorms in Bavaria can change quickly. A single storm cell may bring lightning, torrential rain, hail and powerful wind within minutes. The main risks are not limited to exposed mountain areas: roads, underpasses, basements, riverside paths and densely built towns can all become dangerous.

Why Bavarian storms can turn dangerous fast

Thunderstorms form when warm, moist air rises rapidly and meets colder air higher in the atmosphere. Inside the cloud, strong updrafts and downdrafts help separate electrical charges, producing lightning and thunder. The same vertical motion can support large hailstones and intense bursts of rain.

The Deutscher Wetterdienst, Germany’s national weather service, classifies thunderstorm warnings in levels ranging from an ordinary thunderstorm to a severe or extreme event. A severe storm may combine lightning, damaging gusts, heavy rain and hail. Local effects can differ sharply over short distances, so a warning for one district does not describe conditions everywhere in Bavaria. (dwd.de)

Short, intense rainfall also creates a flash-flood risk. Water can collect rapidly in streets, railway underpasses, cellars and low-lying areas, even when a nearby river has not yet risen. The Federal Office of Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance, known as the BBK, lists rapidly flooded roads, underpasses and basements among the hazards of extreme thunderstorms. (dwd.de)

What to do before the storm arrives

Check the DWD warning map and local authority messages before travelling or starting outdoor activities. The NINA warning app can provide civil-protection alerts, DWD weather warnings and flood information for selected locations or a current position. The BBK cautions that app notifications can be delayed or affected by connectivity, so official instructions from local emergency authorities take priority. (warnung.bund.de)

If a storm is approaching:

Where to shelter during lightning and hail

A solid building is the safest option. A hard-topped vehicle can also provide protection. Stay away from windows and avoid contact with plumbing or electrical equipment during intense lightning. The DWD advises disconnecting sensitive electrical devices where practical and avoiding bathing or showering if the building’s plumbing is not properly grounded. (dwd.de)

If no shelter is available, leave open ground, water and elevated locations. Do not stand beneath an isolated tree. Crouch low with your feet together only as a last resort; do not lie flat on the ground.

After the storm, avoid flooded areas, fallen power lines and damaged buildings. Never drive through moving water: its depth and current are difficult to judge, and a vehicle can lose contact with the road. Report immediate danger to emergency services and follow local evacuation or road-closure instructions.
