Why the Eastern Derby Between Al Qadsiah and Al Ettifaq Matters in the Saudi Pro League

The Saudi Pro League's official website calls it the Eastern Derby. Al Qadsiah and Al Ettifaq are neighbours from the same province, and their meetings carry local pride. But the derby has also become a useful signal for where the Saudi title race is heading.

A Result With a Backstory

The latest meeting went to Al Qadsiah. They beat Al Ettifaq 2-0 in the seventh round of the Roshn League, according to Goal.com. Julian Quinones opened the scoring in the 13th minute after a pass from Mohammed Abu Al-Shamat, and Mateo Retegui made it two from a counter-attack less than three minutes later. The win kept Brendan Rodgers' side top of the table on 15 points, level with Al-Hilal and Al-Nassr.

Al Qadsiah had extra motivation. Last season, Al Ettifaq won the corresponding fixture 3-2, with Quinones scoring twice in a losing cause. OneFootball's pre-match preview noted that Al Qadsiah were still smarting from that upset, which made the 2-0 victory feel like a settling of accounts.

Where the Eastern Derby Is Won

The Eastern Derby tends to be decided in specific areas. Both teams want the ball. Al Ettifaq have led possession in every league match, averaging 58 percent and 435 passes per game. Al Qadsiah have trailed only once, against NEOM SC, a match they won 2-0; they average 57.5 percent and 507 passes. That statistical profile made the match a contest between two sides comfortable in control.

In midfield, Alvaro Medran and Tijjani Reijnders are the players most likely to tip the balance. Medran has one goal and two assists this season, leads for opposition-half passes with 301, and ranks second for chances created with 18. Quinones, meanwhile, is a derby specialist. He has two goals in six rounds this season, but four in four against Al Ettifaq.

Why the Result Matters

The result matters beyond local bragging rights. Al Qadsiah, under Rodgers, are playing with pace and conviction. Goal.com described their football as thrilling and their counter-attacks as lethal. The Eastern Derby offered more evidence that they intend to stay in the title fight. For Al Ettifaq, the loss leaves a lingering question: possession dominance is useful, but converting it into results remains the hard part.
