What Would Aaron Donald’s Rams Comeback Mean for the Defense and a Super Bowl Push?

Aaron Donald is exploring a comeback with the Rams, and this article explains what his reported workouts signal, how the team plans to use him if he returns, and why two years away from football make his impact uncertain.

Aaron Donald is no longer just a retired superstar working out on the side. The former Rams defensive tackle is at the team’s facility, and coach Sean McVay has described the sessions as part of Donald’s own process for deciding whether to play again.

A Decision With a Performance Standard

The Sporting Tribune reported that Donald is exploring a possible return. The Los Angeles Times reported that McVay hopes for a decision sooner rather than later, without putting public pressure on him. Donald retired in 2023 when he was still the most disruptive interior pass rusher in the league. Pro Football Rumors notes that he ranked first among defensive tackles in pass rush win rate at the time. That was two seasons ago. He is now 35, and the Los Angeles Times says he has stayed in peak shape with high-intensity workouts at Rams facilities and at UCLA.

McVay has framed the comeback around a specific standard: a return to performance, not just a return to play. He applied the same standard to injured players such as Puka Nacua and Myles Garrett. That distinction matters. It suggests the Rams will not bring Donald back just to give him a farewell tour. They want production.

A Defined Role, Not a Remake of the Old One

Pro Football Rumors reports that the Rams have held two workouts with Donald and are targeting him for 30 to 40 snaps in the season opener if he returns. That is not a return to a full-time starter's workload. It is a role built around passing situations and keeping him fresh.

Even a limited Donald could alter the defense. A defensive tackle who can collapse the pocket without a blitz makes the whole line and secondary better.

Money remains unsettled. Donald’s 2022 contract carries one season at $30 million, and the Rams have about $15.26 million in cap space. Pro Football Rumors reports that a reworked deal is believed to be the likely path. McVay has said the team is not at the point of announcing anything.

The Super Bowl Question

McVay has also indicated that a Donald return could fuel a Super Bowl run. That is the reason the Rams are having these conversations at all. The uncertainty is real: two years away from game speed is a long time, and no conditioning routine fully replaces live NFL reps. The decision belongs to Donald. If he does come back, the evidence from his workouts, the cap math, and the 30-snap target all point to the same conclusion: the Rams are building around the version of him that can still change a game, not the one who has to carry the defense.
